Urinary and fecal incontinence caused by congenital lumbosacral spina bifida is an annoying condition which is still very di- fficult to treat even now. Since 1970,500 cases were treated with acupuncture with an effective rate of 87.4%. Not only there was improvement in the clinical symptoms,but also the residual urine volume was decreased.Besides the amount of each voiding was increased and the patient micturate more rapidly.These suggested that there was a certain improvement in empty- ing ability and urinating function of the bladder following acupuncture therapy. 234 cases with definite improvement when discharged were followed up for 1～9 years.The therapeutic effect had been per- sisting in 91 cases（38.9%）. When indicated acupuncture therapy should be combined with surgical treatment. When the patients were complicated with urinary tract infection antibacterial and Chinese herbal drug should be given.Suffi- cient attention should be paid to the func- tional exercises of urination and defecation during the course of treatment,which will promote and consolidate the overall therapeu- tic effects.
