Objective: To systematically analyze the effect of virtual reality technology on negative emotions in patients with cardiovascular diseases and provide references for clinical practice. Methods: Randomized controlled studies on the effect of virtual reality technology in reducing negative emotions in patients with cardiovascular diseases were retrieved from The Cochrane Library, PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, Chaoxing, and China Biomedical Literature Database. The search period was from the establishment of the databases to April 6, 2024. Two researchers independently screened and extracted data from the included studies, and a meta-analysis was conducted using Revman 5.4 software. Results: A total of 10 studies involving 540 patients with cardiovascular diseases were included. The results showed that virtual reality technology could significantly reduce the anxiety score in the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS)[MD=-2.29, 95% CI (-3.50, -1.08), P<0.001] and Perceived Stress Questionnaire (PSQ) score [MD=-15.29, 95% CI (-19.70, -10.87), P<0.001]of patients with cardiovascular diseases, but had no significant effect on the depression score (P > 0.05). Conclusion The application of virtual reality technology can reduce anxiety and stress in patients with cardiovascular diseases and show significant improvement in the anxiety score of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). However, the results did not reach a significant level for improving depressive symptoms. Further large-sample, high-quality studies are still needed to verify its effect in the future.
