From the limitation of project environmental impact assessment(EIA),the paper briefly describes the current research situations of EIA and the functions and applications of the geographical information system(GIS).In the meantime,the current status,necessity and the prospect of the application of GIS in the field of EIA are emphatically discussed in the paper.
