余英时在相对承认“外缘论”的基础上,独辟蹊径,采取“内在理路”的分析框架,揭示五四文化运动的传统渊源,实现了五四思想史研究范式的转变。由于时代背景和历史文化特点不同,余英时反对以西方的文艺复兴或启蒙运动比附五四新文化运动,认为中国不需要文艺复兴,启蒙之说在中国也是无根的。他一方面肯定五四的价值,一方面对五四的缺点给予无情的批判,主张继承五四,超越五四,在对中西文化正确认识的基础上,正确处理传统与现代、中学与西学的关系,潜心研究,以退而结网的精神重建中国文化。
