A process suitable for large-scale preparation of 5-bromo-2-methyl phenylhydrazine hydrochloride was developed.The title compound was synthesized from p-toluidines via a series of reactions,including nitration,sandmeyer reaction,nitro reduction,diazotization,reduction.The product was obtained in overall yield of 30%.
