The Professor’s House is Willa Cather’s most complex and provocative work.Since its publication the critics have different opinions from ecstatic praise to complete rejection.Though its theme,structure and writing technique are most controversial,the protagonist is always well regarded by critics.St.Peter has been praised as a particularly engaging character——an intelligent,sensitive,talented and uncontroversial professor.Yet through a careful reading of the novel,St.Peter is found to be far from an engaging and honest gentleman,but a little vain-glorious man,an indifferent,harsh and self-deceptive hypocrite.
