As one group of the world’s most prized edible and medicinal fungi, morels are of very important economic and scientific values. Here, we glance over the research history of the genus Morchella and review recent research progresses of taxonomy, species diversity and distribution, ecological diversity, phylogeny, biogeography, and artificial cultivation of the fungi. We also discuss the potential issues remaining in the current research and give some suggestions for future study.
