苏童的长篇小说《河岸》讲述库文轩、库东亮父子在河流与岸上的故事，书写他们在特定历史时期荒诞的人生境遇。作品中人物命运围绕“河”与“岸”展开，“河”与“岸”的对立，为他们的人生写下注脚，成为人生的形象化隐喻：既代表着人生的安稳与漂泊两种状态，又象征着自由与束缚这两种人生境遇；同时，在二者的对立中还表现出生与死的人生命意。
Su Tong＇s novel ＂The Bank＂ tells a story about Ku Wenxuan and his son Ku Dongliang between the river and the bank, describes the absurd life situation in the particular historical period. The fates of the characters spread around ＂river＂ and ＂bank＂. The opposition between the river and the bank becomes the footnote and visual metaphor of their lives. It represents two kinds of life state ： safety and drift. Also it symbolizes two kinds of life cir- cumstances： freedom and constraint. At the same time, it reflects the life meaning of birth and death.
