Of the three parties involved in the operation of translation, namely, the author, the translator and the reader, which one should be regarded as the subject, the one with whom the subjectivity in translation rests? No consensus has been reached yet in translation studies. The paper examines this controversial issue, addressing the topic of subjectivity in translation, and argues that: 1) The author of the source text cannot be viewed as the subject of translation; 2) Dialogue does not occur between the translator and the author with the source text as a medium; instead, it occurs between the translator and the source text itself with the source language as a medium. Also, the paper discusses the meaning of intersubjectivity in the context of translation.
