通过对西藏当雄牦牛品种形成与发展,生态条件,外形特征,种群结构,生产性能,饲养管理等研究,结果发现,当雄牦牛形成历史悠久,具有毛,奶,肉等多种用途,与其他牦牛特别是西藏其他品种牦牛相比生产性能高,畜产品质好,遗传稳定,耐粗饲,适应高寒地区恶劣的自然条件和粗放的饲养管理,这是目前国内外其它牦牛品种无法替代的优良种质,属于珍贵的地方品种资源。
